The New York Amateur Radio Association was founded in 1995 to petition ARRL to create the Northern New York (NNY) Section. NNYARA has recently reorganized with the goal of promoting and supporting Amateur Radio in Northern New York.

NNYARA MISSION STATEMENT
1) Function as a steering committee to the designated NNY Section Manager, an elected volunteer representative to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and its Board of Directors,
2) Further the exchange of information and cooperation between members and amateur radio clubs in the NNY Section and raise the awareness of the hobby among the public and various governmental committees and representatives,
3) Promote radio knowledge, fraternalism, and individual operating efficiency,
4) Conduct club programs and activities as to advance the general interest and welfare of amateur radio in the community,
5) Aid in providing an entry path to the hobby, including license testing and license classes, 6) Provide other services from time to time as determined by the NNYARA membership.

NNYARA Membership Application NNYARA membership is open to individuals and clubs in the ARRL NNY Section.

NNYARA Officers:
  Chairman John Knobel KC2RMD
  Vice Chairman Paul Palmatier W2POL
  Secretary Matt Lacy KD2TBS
  Treasurer Tom Valosin WB2KLD

The ARRL NNY Section stretches from the Canadian border to the Northern Catskills, encompassing Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, Montgomery, St. Lawrence, and Schoharie counties.

If you're not yet licensed, we invite you to learn more. Come join us at a club meeting or event such as Field Day. Amateur Radio is a fascinating and educational hobby. It is also a valuable personal and community communications resource in emergency situations. When normal communications systems fail, Amateur Radio still works because it is not dependent on communications infrastructure such as cell towers, telephone lines, fiber optic lines, and Internet connections.

If you are interested in becoming a ham, please contact your local club. There are also many free resources available to help you study for your license exam.

NORTHERN NEW YORK AMATEUR RADIO NEWS and EVENTS:

New NNY Section Website! July 26, 2022: Matt Lacy KD2TBS has created a new website for the NNY ARRL Section at nnyarrl.org. This is a work in progress. Content is still being added and we are working out the kinks. Most of the ARES/ecom and other section information on this site will be moved over. Eventually there will be a new version of the NNYARA site focused on NNYARA-specific information and activities.

The Congressionally-mandated FCC fee for Amateur Radio applications ($35) becomes effective on April 19. Info at ARRL

KC2WI has added a files section to this site to hold recorded meetings and other information. The Netlogger club profile has been moved to the files directory. If you set up the profile prior to this move, you will need to replace the current NetLogger profile.

WU2M has created a Netlogger club profile. It is hosted on this server and will be updated periodically. You can set Netlogger to use this on line profile. Netlogger is used for The North Country Group net, Sunday morning on 3958 starting at 8:00 AM. The frequency is also used for other NNY activities.

NNY stations are strongly encouraged to tune to 3925 and check in to the New York Public Operations Net (NYPON) at 5 PM, New York State Traffic and Emergency Net (NYSPTEN) at 6 PM, and Second Region Net (2RN) at 6:30 PM. Being able to receive and send NTS message traffic may be critical in an emergency situation, and practice makes perfect. All these nets also provide for short informals after traffic is passed, so they provide a good daily meeting spot for for NNY stations. 3925 is usually clear between NYPON and NYSPTEN, and after 2RN, so it is a good frequency to meet on for NNY QSOs.

KC2WI is looking for info on digital repeaters in and around NNY so that a directory can be added to this page. Please contact Pete if you have information. A really good way would be by sending a Radiogram through the NYSPTEN, NYPON, or a local traffic net.

All NNY hams are encouraged to join the NNYARA discussion group on groups.io, especially if you are not a Facebook user.

NNY Clean Sweep Certificate: Traditionally the NNY counties have been hard to work during the NYQP. The NNYARA is looking for operators to commit to some on-air time so that all 10 NNY counties are "activated" during the NYQP. To encourage operation and promote NNY Section, NNYARA would like to offer an NNY Clean Sweep certificate to anyone making contact will all ten counties in NNY. Obviously, this means we need to have hams on the air in all the counties. Please fill out the form located at nny10.webhop.net and bookmark the address for future reference. Also, please don't forget to inform the NYQP folks that you will be participating by visiting www.nyqp.org. For more information on this event, please contact Tom WB2KLD.

Suggested activity: Fall Field Day. This could be combined with SET, NYQP or some other on-air event. Get out as a group or individually to test out 'lessons learned' from previous Field Days or make up for the cancellation of the summer FD activities. Please contact NNY SEC KC2WI if interested.
TBD NNY NBEMS digital messaging training - Webinars and on-air practice. TBD based on interest/availability. Please contact NNY SEC KC2WI.
Additional 2022 event dates will be posted when available. Send info to KC2WI.
